Compartmentalizing-learning to separate work from home Part 1
admin
This is something the majority of working people deal with on a day to day basis. It’s all part of finding your balance between work and family. It’s a difficult balancing act, especially if you run your own business and if you work at home.
Some of us work in our homes; others go to our “office”. Wherever we work, we have one thing in common. Work is on our minds a lot. In order to escape from work, we have to put it in its own little compartment in our minds; otherwise it will fill up the rest of our lives. You are not your job and your job is not you!
- Draw the line in the sand between work and home is to have a stopping point or set working hours. Now, we can’t always abide by the set working hours but if you discipline yourself, you c more fulfilling life and stop worrying about work so much.
- Assign a specific area as business only. Maybe you have an office you can leave but you take your work home with you. Have a designated area for work and then leave that too when it’s time to relax.
- Separate your communication systems. Have a separate phone number and email for work and don’t combine them with your personal email addresses.
- Plan days off, vacations, essentially, get a life!
- Minimize your workload with applications or software that will help you. If you are heavy in record keeping for taxes and keeping your contacts straight, file everyday instead of waiting until it all piles up.
- Ask for help-if you are having trouble with something, don’t dwell, ask for help! It will cut down your time working so you can enjoy the rest of your day.
